Here's a short melodic sequence with which you might charm your pet snake.

No snake? No problem!

This sequence is based on the hexatonic Augmented Scale, which was never a huge hit in the snake community, anyway. To be honest, it wasn't really much of a chart topper in the human community either.

However, the scale itself can be a very useful tool, either as a melodic alternative on its own, or as a substitution for the ubiquitous, ever popular Major and minor tonalities - as it contains both of those triad types.

The Augmented Scale is a synthetic, symmetrical scale consisting of alternating minor 3rds (Augmented 2nds) and minor 2nds - or vice versa - depending on its starting point. Like the Augmented triad, these interval combinations repeat a Major 3rd apart, dividing the octave into 3 equal parts, meaning that there are four unique transpositions.
