An Ascending Continuous ii-V-I

A Fun and Engaging Daily Warmup Exercise

3-Page Single Exercise PDF, All 12 Keys

Some of my favorite exercises involve practicing a melodic line over a set of chord changes, where the line and shape continue in a single direction and over the bar line - while the the chords change underneath.

An ascending line, as in the case here, seems to have the more dramatic effect, but descending sequences work as well.

Joe Henderson was a master of this technique and employed it often in his tenor saxophone solos.

This ascending line over a familiar 2-bar ii-V7-I chord progression utilizes the Dorian mode, the Altered Scale and comes to rest on a Major 7th chord arpeggio. Transposed to all 12 keys. Make it a part of your daily warmup routine.
